A nature walk in the Pathways ecosystem.

The students of Grade 4 went for a nature walk on Tuesday to inquire about the ecosystem at Pathways. This was one of the first learning engagements of their unit under the TD theme 'Sharing the Planet'. The students observed their surroundings and made a note of all the biotic and abiotic components they saw during their walk. It was a bright sunny morning and the students were lucky to see butterflies, clovers, a bee hive, many birds, squirrels, trees and plants of different kinds among others.

They returned to the class and in small groups drew and created the ecosystem they observed and connected the components with each other. The activity culminated in the creation of the Pathways Ecosystem together as a class. Each student drew something from the ecosystem and connected them using rope or thread.
The students understood the concept that an ecosystem consists of biotic and abiotic components and they are interdependent.
